    Saint Caterina d'Alessandria Church

Santa Caterina d'Alessandria

The ancient Church of Saint Caterina, located in the old town, was rebuilt in 1086 a. C. because of the request of Caterina Perrese, a Norman noble lady.

The Church was consacrated by Giovanni I, bishop of Bitonto, in 1108. This Church has an incredible history caused by a series of breakdowns and rebuildings.

The first document is dated on 1211 and the first rebuilding was done immediately because of the devotion of the believers.

It is possible to see it on the epigraph located on the lateral entrance architrave.

In 1269 the Church was modified again under the request of Carlo I d'Angiò, king of Naples. Other important modifications of the Church have been done in 1624 when the apes where demolished.
In that period the original floor was covered and lifted up by a flooring level.

In 1928 a new entrance was built and the central apse was divided.
Between 1974 and 1980 there were a lot of acts of restoration and it was possible to discover the original floor.

This extraordinary floor is a mosaic with monochrome limestone strips rectangular or quadrangular shaped.
On the floor there is a geometrical representation that is always different and alternate.

In the the Church were founded fragments of frescos belonged to different ages.
