    La Maja Door

Porta La Maja

Maja Door, before the seventeenth-century repair, it was a simple structure: an hall with barrell vault and an external archivolt that is possible to admire walking down in Saint Pietro de Castro street.

In 1667 the Middle Ages structure of the main arch was completed with a more complicated one on the exterior part.

The structure was characterized by a solid and plastic seventeenth-century vestment, formed by a new arch with an archivolt characterized by elements with bosses and double semi-columns with Doric capitals, tympanum and architrave.

The frame on the arch unifies the whole composition and today it is the base of the Savoia coat of arms and of Madonna del Carmelo with Child statue.

With the new repair, the cities walls are no longer only a defensive structure, but they represented the whole community.

In the seventeenth-century repair of Maja Door, the town entrance had take up an aesthetic importance.
